Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in utilizing replay technology.
Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships this year.
Athletes are granted the ability to question particular decisions from the official, following the protocol already in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
This technology will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.
This step arrives only a year after the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to review specific decisions, such as:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.
Case in Point
An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Other Changes
Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was in or out.
Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
