Tetris Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Whenever a prominent prize-giving event approaches, you'll find an outcry for introducing of new categories to acknowledge overlooked contributions and delight the hearts of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. The same goes for tabletop games, this being someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request is the most urgent and significant. The demand is this: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains a necessary evil within the realm of gaming, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards offer these award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories actually cover numerous genres, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: structural challenges from a specific release, intense tile-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles launched regularly lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
  • Another imaginative release missed out during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers barely qualified for niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most popular titles worldwide maintaining this status for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience competes with popular creative games claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators are working at the demanding boundary interactive creation, producing among most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Just like cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay decades.
